1962

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother
What will I be
Will I be pretty
Will I be rich
Here's what she said to me
Que sera, sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que sera, sera
What will be, will be

Faith

Religion is a touchy subject; it has been known to start a war or two. I respect any path a person takes that brings them closer to his or her god. As a child my parents took us to a Methodist church. We went to Sunday school and vacation bible school and then we just stopped going. I don’t know the whys or even when. I went long enough to have the faith of a child. I knew for a fact that God was concerned about my well being. It was as a child that a panicky fear that someone is behind you started happening. So I decided I had angels around me. They guarded my back so I wouldn’t look like a jerk running away from something that wasn’t there.

As a teenager a friend asked me to go to church with her, she was Catholic. It was a longer service than I had ever attended and a lot of standing, kneeling, sitting, God aerobics. Then they offered communion, this I knew and so I walked down the aisle and took communion. After the service was over my friend told me I actually should not have taken communion because I wasn’t Catholic and I hadn’t been confirmed. OK, there were rules to this; someone could have clued me in. As the years went by I found myself searching, I attended services in Lutheran, Protestant, Greek Orthodox, Baptist and Apostolic Churches. I believe God was at all of them but none of them quite fit me. Although most of the people I met were kind and loving people, I also found that some of the biggest “sinners” hide behind the church doors. So like Dorothy and her ruby slippers, I discovered I had the power the whole time. The path I take to God is as individual and unique as I am. It’s not about what religion I am, but the faith I possess.
